About the Artist – Jenny Brake

Jenny Brake is a long time resident of the West End, Washington, DC. Ms. Brake is primarily an abstract painter whose paintings portray a directness and strength inspired by her no-nonsense approach to the world.

A colorist, Ms. Brake composes with colors and shapes to create compelling paintings. She finds her abstract work liberating and exciting –it reflects her joy in life’s journey. Her paintings evolve as she works, with each color and shape adding new complexities and intrigue to the canvas.

Ms. Brake, whose commitment to creative work began at an early age, studied at the Corcoran and at the Smithsonian under Trinka Simon. For the past five years she has painted weekly with two other local Washington artists – Debra Naylor and Barbara Pace. The three return in some degree to the roots of Foundry Gallery which was created in 1971 by three women who rented studio and exhibition space in the Duval Foundry building in Georgetown.

The artist has exhibited for several years at Foundry Gallery and also at other art spaces in the Washington area.
