Patricia Zannie
Artist statement:
Patricia, a local collage artist, teaches in the School of Art and Design at Montgomery College.
Patricia's original style marries strong design with the creative impulse. Using snips of magazine and other papers as if they were paint, she integrates, melds, and blends them with ink, marker, oil pastel, and watercolor, layering numerous levels, as in the tradition of the Old Masters.
Strongly influenced by the rebel artists, Monet, Cezanne, and Matisse, Patricia keeps some of the assumptions in the traditional artistic approach to the illusion of space, while rejecting others.
Today, while most artists select either total abstraction or the traditional system of perspective, “What I do is combine them in the same piece of art. I use geometric shapes to provide form and structure. Then I intersperse two-dimensional patterns into a flattened version of the world we perceive. It's great fun. With my students, I hope to awaken their spirits and inspire artistic rebellion. It’s the joy of illusion.”
