Since
1971 Foundry Gallery has encouraged and promoted Washington,
DC area artists. Begun by four students of Gene Davis, who shared
studio space in the Duval Foundry in Georgetown, Foundry offers
an alternative gallery experience to artists. As an artist-run
organization we are free to exhibit a wider range of work than
commercial galleries and to allow artists greater control over
the exhibition and sale of their work. We provide all members with a mailing list and a detailed timeline to use in preparation for their exhibitions.
Members
are primarily local artists who pool their resources to support
the gallery. We are a diverse group with different ages and
backgrounds, and who work in diverse media.
We
share a commitment to quality and professionalism in our art
and to the promotion of art in Washington. Artists join for
many reasons. Some are seeking alternatives to the commercial
art scene. Some are in the beginning stages of their career
and want to expand their experience. All benefit from both the
exposure for their art and the knowledge they gain of the gallery
business. Artists who become full members make a two-year commitment
to the gallery. Their contribution amount is paid monthly to
the gallery for the two-year period. At the end of the initial
contract period, membership is renewable.
As
a non-profit organization Foundry members contribute to the
educational mission of the gallery by planning and implementing
events during their contract periods. These events have ranged
from lectures by artists and performances by invited guests
to workshops for children, adults and other artists. Artists
also contribute to the functioning of the gallery.
Foundry
holds monthly meetings and artists join one committee. Artists gallery-sit once per month and twice during their solo exhibition month.
A
few exhibition opportunities are available for artists residing
outside the Washington area and Foundry keeps a list of interested
"guest artists."
